“It has become standard issue for successful Asian Americans to just sort of avoid talking about race. This, I guess, makes sense along the spectrum of assimilation, but it’s an inherently elitist stance that plays a bit too coy, especially in a country that has largely decided to turn a blind eye toward racism against Asian Americans.” - Jay Caspian Kang, Person of Interest: Jeremy Lin, Grantland Magazine.
Yes, basketball. Most of you don’t know this, but my ex was one of those weird but happy nerd/jock mixes. He played basketball. He still does. And soccer. And he hikes and climbs mountains. But back to the basketball. We used to watch Knicks games at Madison Square Garden all the time, so I do have some emotional investment with this team. And I absolutely love that their current saviour comes in the form of a 4th-string Asian-American with roots in Taiwan, who was undrafted coming into the NBA, graduated with an Economics degree from Harvard, and was on the verge of being forced out of the league. The guy didn’t even have a home and was sleeping on his brother’s couch just two weeks ago. Now he’s selling out stadiums and running circles around Kobe Bryant.
Asian dorks score.
